Boston Dynamics & Hyundai Motor Group Expand Collaboration to Drive Mobility Manufacturing & Innovation

Boston Dynamics, a global leader in mobile robotics, and Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) are entering a new phase of collaboration aimed at boosting manufacturing capabilities, expanding robot production, and fostering a dynamic robotics ecosystem in the United States.
Recently, Hyundai Motor Group announced a $21 billion investment in the U.S., which includes $6 billion dedicated to advancing innovation and strengthening partnerships with American companies. As part of this initiative, the Group plans to acquire tens of thousands of robots over the next several years. This effort will accelerate Boston Dynamics’ growth by integrating the Group’s manufacturing capacity, positioning the company to become the world’s leading producer of advanced mobile robots.
Hyundai Motor Group is already utilizing Boston Dynamics’ Spot robots for industrial inspections and predictive maintenance across its facilities, and plans to introduce the Atlas robot to its factories in the near future.
During a recent all-employee town hall at Boston Dynamics, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang joined Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter to discuss future business strategies. They reaffirmed Hyundai’s commitment to supporting Boston Dynamics, expanding AI investments, and promoting collaboration and external partnerships.
Through the integration of Boston Dynamics’ robotics solutions, Hyundai Motor Group aims to further enhance its advanced manufacturing capabilities and maintain its leadership in technological innovation.
“Boston Dynamics and robotics AI will play a crucial role in achieving the Group’s goal,” said Jaehoon Chang, Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group. “Physical AI and humanoid robots will transform our business landscape to the next level. Through our collaboration, we will expedite the process to achieve leadership in the robotics industry.”
Speaking at the town hall, Robert Playter said, “Over the course of the last few years, there has been an impressive uptick in new entrants to the robotics space. It is imperative we work together with Hyundai Motor Group to combine our strengths, because the opportunity for advanced robots in the mobility industry is massive.”
“We have a phenomenal track record of delivering dependable general-purpose robots,” continued Playter. “Today marks a pivotal moment because with its commitment and support, Hyundai Motor Group will become our biggest customer. It will help us to build successful AI policies, and will also unlock the Group’s vast commercial relationships to help establish strategic customers for products like Stretch, entering into multi-lateral agreements in which we may deliver robots, trucks, and electric vehicles together.”
The town hall, attended by more than 800 employees, featured key leaders including Hokeun Chung, EVP and Head of the Future Strategy Division at Hyundai Motor Group; Heung-Soo Kim, EVP and Head of the Global Strategy Office; Juncheul Jung, EVP and Head of Manufacturing; Hae In Kim, EVP and Head of HR at Hyundai Motor Company; Dong Jin Hyun, VP and Head of the Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor Group; and Marc Raibert, Founder of Boston Dynamics and Executive Director of the Robotics and AI Institute. The hour-long session reaffirmed Boston Dynamics’ growing collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group and underscored its strategic importance to both companies’ futures.
At the opening ceremony of Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA)—the Group’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Bryan County, Georgia—the partnership was further showcased as Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot performed live demonstrations for VIP guests. Spot will be used for exterior quality inspections in HMGMA’s weld shop, while the humanoid robot Atlas is planned to be deployed at the facility in the future.
