Lucid, Nuro, and Uber Partner on Next-Generation Autonomous Robotaxi Program

Lucid Group, Inc., Nuro, Inc. (“Nuro”), and Uber Technologies, Inc. (“Uber”) have announced the launch of a next-generation premium global robotaxi program designed exclusively for the Uber ride-hailing platform.
Set to debut in a major U.S. city late next year, the service combines the Lucid Gravity’s software-defined vehicle architecture, the Nuro Driver™ Level 4 autonomous system, and Uber’s extensive global network and fleet management expertise. The result is a fully integrated robotaxi experience built for comfort, safety, and scalability.
Uber plans to deploy 20,000+ Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro Driver over six years. These vehicles will be owned and operated by Uber or its fleet partners and available exclusively on the Uber platform. The first Lucid-Nuro robotaxi prototype is already undergoing autonomous testing at Nuro’s Las Vegas proving grounds.
As part of the collaboration, Uber also intends to make multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Lucid and Nuro.
“Autonomous vehicles have tremendous potential to improve cities worldwide,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “We’re excited to work with Nuro and Lucid on this program, designed specifically for Uber, to bring the benefits of self-driving technology to more people globally.”
Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid, added: “Uber’s investment reinforces the strength of our zonal architecture, vehicle platform, and market-leading range. Combined with our spacious, high-quality interiors, Lucid vehicles are ideally suited for ridesharing. This marks the beginning of our journey into the multi-trillion-dollar autonomous mobility market.”
Jiajun Zhu, Co-Founder and CEO of Nuro, commented: “This partnership highlights what’s possible when proven AV technology meets real-world scale. Nuro has spent nearly a decade developing an AI-first autonomy system that is safe, scalable, and vehicle-agnostic, backed by five years of driverless deployments across multiple U.S. cities. Together with Lucid’s advanced vehicle design and Uber’s global reach, we’re proud to launch a robotaxi service built to serve millions of people worldwide.”
A Robotaxi Designed for Scale and Safety
The robotaxi will harness the Lucid Gravity’s advanced technology platform, including its redundant electrical and control systems and long driving range, making it well-suited for large-scale fleet operations. Autonomy will be powered by the Nuro Driver, a Level 4 system that combines AI-driven software with automotive-grade hardware for safe and cost-efficient operations. Hardware integration will take place at Lucid’s assembly line, with Nuro’s software installed when the vehicles are commissioned by Uber.
Uber’s platform, which operates in 70 countries and facilitates 34 million trips daily, provides the scale to bring autonomous mobility to a global audience. The Lucid Gravity’s EPA-estimated 450-mile range minimizes downtime for charging, helping reduce costs and maximize availability. The Nuro Driver’s AI architecture enables rapid adaptation to new environments and platforms, streamlining deployment.
Nuro will oversee the development of a comprehensive safety case, validated through simulations, closed-course trials, and supervised on-road testing, to ensure the robotaxi meets the highest standards of safety across dozens of performance categories.
