Boston Dynamics Opens Robotics Metaplant Application Center to Train Humanoid Robots for Manufacturing Tasks

Boston Dynamics has launched the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), marking the next phase of its robotics and AI strategy. The facility follows the company’s unveiling of Atlas during Hyundai Motor Group’s Media Day presentation at CES 2026.

RMAC will function as a testing and training center for deploying Atlas robots within Hyundai Motor Group’s automotive manufacturing operations. The robots are being trained in real-world production environments, including preparing and sequencing automotive parts before delivering them in the correct order for assembly. Applications are expected to expand to component assembly by 2030, with Atlas eventually taking on additional repetitive and physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy loads.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to rapidly scale the deployment of Atlas robots across its global manufacturing network, with an initial target of 25,000 units at Hyundai Motor and Kia plants worldwide over the coming years. The Group also plans to establish a new U.S. production facility with an annual capacity of 30,000 robots.

The first phase of the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) is now operational at HMGMA, with further expansion already planned. Next year, operations will relocate to a new facility at HMGMA that will increase the RMAC’s footprint to roughly ten times its current size. The expanded center will continue preparing Atlas for automotive applications while also allowing Boston Dynamics to explore potential uses in other industries.

In 2027, Boston Dynamics plans to work with existing Spot and Stretch customers across manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences to expand data collection and other activities that support Atlas’ ongoing training.
