Boston Dynamics & Hyundai Motor Group Expand Collaboration to Drive Mobility Manufacturing & Innovation

Boston Dynamics, a global leader in mobile robotics, is entering a new phase of collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to scale up manufacturing capabilities, accelerate robot production, and foster a robust robotics ecosystem in the U.S.

As part of a broader $21 billion investment in the U.S. announced last week, Hyundai Motor Group will invest $6 billion to drive innovation and expand strategic partnerships with American companies. A significant portion of this initiative involves the purchase of tens of thousands of robots in the coming years, positioning Boston Dynamics for substantial growth. Hyundai will also integrate Boston Dynamics’ manufacturing expertise to help establish it as the world’s leading producer of advanced mobile robots.

Hyundai Motor Group has already begun deploying Boston Dynamics’ Spot robots for industrial inspections and predictive maintenance, and plans to roll out the humanoid robot Atlas across its factories in the near future.

Last week, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang joined Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter at a company-wide town hall. During the session, they spoke about future plans, reaffirmed Hyundai’s commitment to Boston Dynamics, and highlighted the importance of AI investments, strategic partnerships, and collaborative innovation.

Integrating Boston Dynamics’ robotic solutions will enhance Hyundai’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, aligning with its ongoing innovation strategy.

“Boston Dynamics and robotics AI are central to realizing our goals,” said Jaehoon Chang, Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group. “Physical AI and humanoid robotics will revolutionize the way we do business. Through this collaboration, we will accelerate our path to leadership in the robotics industry.”

According to Goldman Sachs, the humanoid robotics market is expected to surpass $38 billion by 2035. As the robotics sector continues to grow, rapid action is essential to scale up robot development and production. Boston Dynamics will work closely with Hyundai to identify key areas where robotics can enhance productivity and efficiency.

Robert Playter noted at the town hall, “In recent years, we've seen a surge of new players in the robotics field. Partnering with Hyundai Motor Group allows us to combine our strengths and tap into the immense potential for robotics in the mobility sector.”

He added, “We have a strong track record of delivering reliable, general-purpose robots. Hyundai’s backing marks a major milestone for us. Not only will they become our largest customer, but their support will also drive our AI development and open the door to broader commercial opportunities. This includes multi-lateral agreements involving robots, trucks, and electric vehicles.”

More than 800 employees attended the session, including senior executives from both organizations such as Hokeun Chung, Heung-Soo Kim, Juncheul Jung, Hae In Kim, Dong Jin Hyun, and Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert. The event underscored the deepening collaboration between Boston Dynamics and Hyundai Motor Group and its pivotal role in both companies’ futures.

At the recent opening of the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Bryan County, Georgia – the Group’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility – the partnership was further showcased. Boston Dynamics’ Spot performed demonstrations for VIP guests and will be used for exterior quality inspections in HMGMA’s weld shop. The humanoid robot Atlas will also be introduced at the plant in the future.

The focus on collaboration echoed throughout the town hall and HMGMA event, reinforcing Boston Dynamics’ longstanding commitment to working with research institutions and industry partners. Earlier this year, the company announced new partnerships with NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, the Toyota Research Institute, and RAI, a fellow Hyundai affiliate, to continue advancing robotic technologies.
